3000 people. a large air-conditioned hall. a stage with booming speakers and rocking stereo.
it was quiet enough to hear a pin drop. it's amazing how so many people can be at a place at one time, and yet make so little noise. everyone knelt at their seats, as a group of people slowly walked into the hall.
amidst this group was a cross - a large golden one with a white disc in the middle of it. reverence was in the air. the bittersweet smell of incense wafted in the air, as a priest shook the incense bottle back and forth; smoke poured from it, forming mysterious shapes of beautiful things.
a voice started softly singing; soon everyone joined in, adding their voices in worship, praise and thanks. a capella, without lyrics; everyone sang together a song they knew by heart. different people from different places who have never met before, coming together, singing together, in unison. there's something so wonderful in that universality.
i'm always thankful how enriched my life is being a catholic. so much emotional development during my formative years can be attributed to the sunday classes, and the sharings that we were forced to make. so many things about life i learned by being given the opportunity to share things that schoolmates, cca mates and other friends simply just don't talk enough about. and then there's the experiences... the many times we've felt so full, so complete, just by joining in the dance. singing together, getting high together, clapping and jumping and cheering together. laymen don't realize how much awe just a tiny glimpse of divinity can inspire.
there's an angel in everyone. it just takes friendship to bring it out :)
